Mitochondrial Eve

Scientist have come up with a theory of evolution that may possibly link all human beings together genetically. The theory suggests that there may have once existed a maternal ancestor whose genetic DNA is shared by all human beings. This maternal ancestor has come to be called our Mitochondrial Eve. Human beings, none to be excluded, receive their mitochondrial DNA only from their mothers. Genetically, nearly 100% (99.9%) of all mankind’s mitochondrial DNA is identical. For scientists, this is a critical characteristic that can be used to backtrack in time and locate where our Mitochondrial Eve may have resided. In this way, Mitochondrial DNA allows us to date back 65 million years of history. As seen in the geographic diagram below, it is suggested that our Mitochondrial Eve may have been from the Northeastern Region of Africa.
